Confluenza Public Monument – Roma Street Parklands – The beautiful Confluenza public monument is a spectacular piece developed by artists Sebastian and Salvatore Di Mauro. They were assisted by graphic designer Jennifer Marchant.
T. Wrafter & Sons were commissioned to provide the materials, workmanship and installation needed to complete the artwork.
Confluenza was created to recognise the contribution of Italian migrants to Queensland’s rich history and was a gift from Associazione Lucania del Queensland to the City of Brisbane.
The artists cite their personal family experiences as inspiration for the piece, with meal-time and dining as a family being a pivotal aspect of Italian culture.
Confluenza is constructed from Italian Carrara marble, etched with circular plate motifs. Each is based on plans of significant and historical Italian buildings, such as the Pantheon.
Much of the language used in the inscriptions are based on food and beverages which supports the overarching theme of breaking bread around the dining table. All of the inscriptions are in Italian and were painstakingly carved to perfection.
The artwork was unveiled on 15 September 2013, after a complicated installation process involving craning in the large pieces.
